Thirty five years ago my wife and I began a love affair with bonsai. Since then it's been a matter of more and more bonsai trees. If you do the math you'll figure out that I'm no longer a spring chicken. The trees seem to get bigger and pots heavier every year. We've learned from bonsai masters like Susumu Nakamura, John Naka, Toshio Saburomaru, Chase Rosade, Suthin Sukolovisit, and many others.

Over the years much of our collection has been seen on HGTV, Discovery Channel, PBS, books and magazines. We had to come up with a descriptive name for publicity, since we lived in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, the obvious choice was White Bear Bonsai Garden. The name stuck even after we moved to North Carolina.

Visit our blog page and leave a comment.

Welcome to our garden.

Phoenix graft, Juniperus scopulorum / Juniperus shimpaku

Coastal pine

Coastal pine

Pacific coastal pine, Pinus contorta

The pacific coastal pine is also known as the lodgepole pine. This collected specimen is at least 40 years old (probably much older). The rough bark and short needles make for an ancient appearance. The style is reflective of trees often seen near a coastline blown by the wind. This tree could easily be the centerpiece of a major collection.

Korean Hornbeam Bonsai

Korean hornbeam, Carpinus coreana

This is a Korean hornbeam bonsai from stock purchased at a convention in Detroit. It has a nice large base and a developed canopy. As a result of dramatic trunk carving it looks old. My collection has always been light on deciduous bonsai so I was happy to obtain this one. I have no idea of age, but, I've had it since 2000......
