 Shimpaku Juniper
Mas Ishii had a well deserved reputation for making outstanding shimpaku bonsai by grafting kishu shimpaku juniper foliage to san jose juniper trunks. While shimpaku has smooth bark san jose has more textured bark. With Mas' skill the marriage is without blemish. Mas would graft small junipers. After the graft had taken he would either style and sell them as finished bonsai or sell them as semi finished stock. This bonsai is one of those semi finished grafts. It is knobby san jose up to the first branch and shimpaku for the rest. We bougtht the unstyled tree about 1995 and have been refining it since. This is a collectors item.
