Eastern larch, larix laricinia

In Minnesota we have a lot of peat bogs. The sphagnum moss grows a foot thick over the water. We collect larch from these bogs. Since there is virtually no nitrogen in peat the growth rate is very slow. A larch just a few feet tall can be a hundred years old.

Larches are one of the few deciduous conifers. Even as bonsai, in September they turn a brilliant gold and drop their needles. In the spring the new foliage comes out a beautiful lime green. They do form diminutive comes. These trees are very winter hardy, actually to zone 2. I have heard of larches growing as far south as the Carolinas, but, I'd consider them strictly northern tier trees.

  • This bonsai is in mid-stage development. The original styling is complete. Now only time will mature it's features.

  • Collected in 2008, styled in 2010.

  • Likes full sun. Grows in acidic soil.

Training wires can be removed in mid 2011.

Height 48". Nice Chinese pot.

The price includes all packaging, handling, and shipping charges, a $250.00 value. Your bonsai will be packed in a sturdy carton filled with styrofoam peanuts and strapped to a pallet. We ship via UPS Freight. By shipping in this manner we have had no damage to trees or pots. You'll also end up with enough peanuts to take care of your Christmas needs for several years.
