When we first started bonsai we bought John Naka's "Bonsai Techniques". I think it was that book that had a picture of his California juniper, Tora. What a magnificent bonsai with the jinned spire rising from from the foliage. When we found a piece of Rocky Mountain juniper deadwood with a spire I was in hog heaven. Now I could have my own Tora. Well, maybe not. Anyway, we created a phoenix graft bonsai by attaching a shimpaku to the deadwood. We've been working on this phoenix for about 15 years. The shimpaku is vigorous and looks natural and the deadwood looks as ancient as anything I've seen in books. Here's your chance to have a wonderfully old creation at a very reasonable cost.
